• Yahoo! was created in 1994 by David Filo and Jerry Yang, Ph.D. candidates in Electrical Engineering at Stanford University.
• Yahoo! is supposed to stand for "Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle," but the creators of Yahoo! insist they chose the name because they considered themselves to be yahoos.
• Yahoo! went live on the Internet in August 1994.  
• Yahoo! is the web's oldest directory.
• Yahoo! is very popular and is one of the world's best known web-sites.
• Yahoo! directory is hand-edited into categories.
• Yahoo! is useful for popular and general interest searches.
• Yahoo! Search queries are provided by Yahoo!'s own search engine database (as from February 2004 - searches were previously supplied by Google).
• Yahoo! is an hierarchical subject index, which allows you to drill down through the Yahoo directory, from the general to the specific.
• Yahoo! includes cached copies of pages.
• Yahoo! only indexes the first 500k of web pages.
• Yahoo! search results show categories which allow you to jump to a page of web-sites related to your search.
• A disadvantage is that much of the Yahoo! directory is dated and there is a heavy commercial bias. Submitters to the directory pay upwards of $299 to be listed.
• Yahoo! supplies "paid for inclusion" site in the search results.
• Yahoo! does not support case-sensitive searching.
• Yahoo! has in excess of 1.5 million links.
